One of the greatest challenges RunDisney participants face is balancing their time between enjoying the parks and getting enough rest for their races. After all, part of the magic of RunDisney is running through the Disney parks—but it’s just as magical to explore them when you’re not racing! So how do you make the most of both?
As a past RunDisney participant, we’ve navigated the delicate balance between park fun and race preparation. Here are our top tips on how to enjoy the parks without tiring yourself out before race day.
The Key: Balance Rest with Fun
With early morning race starts, it’s easy to underestimate how important rest is during race weekends. But rest doesn’t have to mean missing out on the fun! The trick is planning your park time strategically so that you’re still ready for your race.
Here’s how to strike the perfect balance:
1. Prioritize Light Activity on Race Eve
Before a race, choose low-key park activities that won’t wear you out. Avoid long walking distances and intense rides like Space Mountain or Expedition Everest. Instead, opt for gentle attractions like:
• Living with the Land (Epcot): This slow-moving boat ride is relaxing and educational—perfect for pre-race downtime.
• The Enchanted Tiki Room (Magic Kingdom): Enjoy the nostalgic charm of this tropical show without leaving your seat.
• The Seas with Nemo & Friends (Epcot): A delightful ride that gives you a chance to rest your legs while exploring the underwater world.
2. Take Advantage of Rest Stops
Each park has plenty of places to rest. Whether it’s a shady bench, a cozy restaurant, or a peaceful garden, these locations are perfect for relaxing between attractions. Some of my favorite spots include:
• The Hub Grass in Magic Kingdom: This grassy area in front of Cinderella Castle is great for laying down and people-watching.
• The France Pavilion Gardens in Epcot: Quiet and scenic, this is a wonderful place to take a breather and recharge.
3. Go for Evening Park Time After Morning Races
After your morning race, spend time recovering and then head to the parks later in the day when you’ve had a chance to rest. Evening hours offer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, plus you can take advantage of nighttime spectaculars like:
• Happily Ever After (Magic Kingdom): The perfect way to end a day at the park, without requiring any extra energy.
• Epcot’s Luminous Fireworks: A beautiful show that lets you relax after a long day.
Best Times to Visit the Parks During Race Weekends
RunDisney race weekends have early start times, typically around 5:00 AM, meaning you’ll be finished before the parks are in full swing. That leaves plenty of time to recover and enjoy the parks later in the day.
For Half Marathon and Marathon Runners:
• Consider shorter park days after your longer races. Schedule your rest days on the evening before the race to keep your legs fresh.
• Post-race: Opt for gentler parks like Epcot or Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which offer plenty of places to sit, fewer intense rides, and great shows.
For 5K and 10K Runners:
• You may have more flexibility with park time since these races are shorter. Aim for lighter park activity the day before, and hit the parks full-force after your run.
Use Lightning Lane to Maximize Fun Without Overexerting
RunDisney weekends are busy, and you don’t want to spend hours waiting in lines after your race. Using Lightning Lane helps you maximize the fun without wearing yourself out. Here’s how:
• Book Attractions Strategically: Use Genie+ to book rides in advance, focusing on those that don’t require long walks between them. Rides like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion, and It’s a Small World are ideal.
• Take Advantage of Short Wait Times: With early access to booking times, you can knock out your favorite attractions in the morning, leaving you the afternoon to rest or enjoy lighter activities.
Pre- and Post-Race Dining Tips
Eating well before and after your race is just as important as resting. Pre-race, focus on healthy carbs, proteins, and hydration to fuel your run. After your race, celebrate with a meal that replenishes your energy reserves. Here are some great dining options:
• Pre-Race Carb-Loading:
• Via Napoli (Epcot): Perfect for carb-loading with their delicious pizzas and pasta.
• The Wave (Contemporary Resort): Offers a balanced meal of proteins and carbs to fuel your run.
• Post-Race Celebration:
• California Grill (Contemporary Resort): Celebrate your race finish with a view of the fireworks and a gourmet meal.
• Le Cellier (Epcot): Reward yourself with one of Disney’s best steak dinners after you cross the finish line.
